N/R: CHASS threatens to close schools due to unpaid fees

In response to what they termed as "non-payment of cash for perishables," the Northern Region branch of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has threatened to close Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Region.

N/R: CHASS threatens to close schools due to unpaid fees

The heads claim that suppliers' unwillingness to continue providing goods is a result of debt.

These were included in a letter sent by the regional chapter following an urgent meeting on August 15 in Tamale.

Below are excerpts from the letter:

Schools in the northern regions may close if money is not paid for perishables.

On August 15, 2022, Northern regions CHASS had an emergency meeting, during which it became obvious

  1. Going to the market is quite challenging since, aside from the perishables arrears owed us for the first semester of the 2021–2022 academic year, no money has been paid for the eleven weeks of the second semester we have completed so far.
  2. Due to the levels of debt, our suppliers that provide us with credit for perishable goods like eggs and meat are unable to maintain the delivery.
  3. In light of the aforementioned, we would want to clarify that the SHS 1 students from the single truck schools who were scheduled to return to class on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, would delay reporting until we get payment. This also applies to individuals who are required to report on September 4, 2022, but are enrolled in transitional schools.
  4. The second-semester SHS 2 students would have to be sent home by the region's heads of schools.
  5. Finally, Management is urged to pay the schools' ongoing expenses, which have been past due since last year. The smooth operation of our schools is impacted by the nonpayment of this portion of our funds in areas like maintenance and repairs, field trips, practical instruction in our laboratories, etc.
